Mason Greenwood scored then teed up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as Marseille beat Rennes 3-0 in the Coupe de France last 16 on Tuesday.

L'Équipe notes that Greenwood was the standout, while Quentin Merlin endured another difficult night up against the Englishman.

Marseille led inside two minutes when Timothy Weah dispossessed Merlin and squared for Amine Gouiri. Greenwood’s fine cross on 15 minutes was clawed away by Alidu Seidu. Merlin moved into midfield after Kamara went off on 31 minutes.

Soon after the restart, Gouiri slipped Greenwood through to beat Brice Samba on 46 minutes, the move beginning with Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg winning an aerial duel from the goalkeeper’s long kick. Greenwood later created a huge chance that Gouiri missed on 76 minutes.

Greenwood then picked out Aubameyang to seal it on 83 minutes, after Höjbjerg had launched the attack. Weah finished at left back after Emerson Palmieri departed on 82 minutes, with Benjamin Pavard switching to the right.

Rennes’ defence toiled. Abdelhamid Aït-Boudlal and Anthony Rouault were unsure, Jérémy Jacquet also struggled, and Merlin was booked for fouling Paixao on 67 minutes before being substituted on 79. Loïc Brassier entered on 79, while Habib Beye’s back five offered little with Lepaul then Embolo isolated and Blas starting on the bench.
