Orlando City SC still setting club records, even when they draw

As Orlando City SC struggles through a flurry of draws, they continue to set new club records.

It’s definitely not as anger-producing as losses. But the four 0-0 draws in the past five games are frustrating Orlando City SC players and coaches.

Yet, even in this season of 0-0 draws, the Lions find ways to set new club records.

In the latest 0-0 draw against the Chicago Fire FC, Orlando City reached the 526th minute without allowing a goal. That far surpasses the 364 minutes that preceded Orlando making the 2023 MLS Cup playoffs.

Defender Kyle Smith appeared in more than 20 minutes of that match. That puts him past 10,000 minutes playing for the Lions across all competitions. He’s just the sixth player in club history with that achievement.

The fifth straight clean sheet extends the club’s record for most consecutive without conceding a goal.

When defender Rodrigo Schlegel started the match, it was his 150th appearance for Orlando City across all competitions. That puts him in company with some of the players leading the Lions back to the MLS playoffs. Those include defender and team Captain Robin Jansson with 210 appearances, defender Kyle Smith,  189, and goalkeeper Pedro Gallese, 171.

So the Lions aren’t lacking effort. Even when they draw, the team is going somewhere. Gallese completed his finest game of the season, according to scouts’ reports. After the Fire match, Head Coach Oscar Pareja discussed one player who will add the spark the team needs to win a match like this outright.

Pareja said the players on the pitch did well. But getting midfielder Eduard Atuesta will dramatically increase Orlando’s chances in hard-fought defensive games, as these 0-0 draws have been. He was absent from the pitch for that match.

Orlando City SC needs Atuesta and players with his skills to find them one last chance, complete one final pass, and gain the one goal that will win. Then the team will complete the turnaround, which will gain them more wins in the MLS.
