Óscar Cardozo, 43, Benfica’s record foreign scorer, has announced his retirement from football. The player said in a social media post that he was ending his career.
In the early hours of Thursday, 26 April, he shared a highlights video on Instagram and made sure to reference Benfica. The soundtrack recalled a chant from his spell with the club that warned opponents about Tacuara’s danger.
With a career spanning more than 20 years, the Paraguayan began at 3 de Febrero, then moved to Nacional Asunción. He later headed to Argentina with Newell’s Old Boys before crossing to Europe with Benfica, where he reached his peak.
He stayed at Benfica until 2014, then had spells with Trabzonspor and Olympiakos. In recent years he played for Libertad in his homeland.
For Benfica he struck 172 goals in 293 official matches, and remains their highest-scoring foreign player. Between 2007 and 2014 he won two league titles, one Portuguese Cup and four League Cups.
