Óskarsson signed off his best season with 83 minutes in Iceland’s 3-0 defeat to Messi’s Argentina. Diario Vasco notes he ends the campaign in strong form and with clear backing from Pellegrino Matarazzo at Real Sociedad and Arnar Gunnlaugsson with Iceland.
At Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Alabama, the striker managed no shot on target, completed one dribble and attempted 15 passes, 10 successful. He shared the pitch with Messi for 13 minutes after the Argentine replaced Giuliano Simeone on 70 minutes. Óskarsson did not seek Messi’s shirt after full time.
He now takes a well-earned break before a new campaign in which much is expected of him. The club’s faith in the Icelandic forward is clear, and there is hope he can become the starting centre-forward the txuri-urdin need.
Recent months should fuel his confidence. Matarazzo worked to pair him with Oyarzabal in the run-in, with Oyarzabal operating behind him to supply passes.
Óskarsson ends the season with one of Europe’s best scoring rates, fourth overall at one goal every 90 minutes, having scored nine in La Liga across 830 minutes. Only Harry Kane on 1.4 per 90, Cristian Stuani on 1.1 and Hamza Igamane on 1.1 rank higher.
Within Spain, he sits second for goals per minute, behind only Stuani on one every 79 minutes. Óskarsson averages one every 92, with Mbappé on 104, Raphinha on 107 and Lewandowski on 118.
