Contract talks over academy full-back Joaquín Martínez Gauna, known as Oso, have stalled at Sevilla as the player’s pay demands clash with the club’s fragile finances. According to La Colina De Nervion, the negotiations have not progressed as hoped.

The Spanish-Argentine has impressed across stretches of the season and took Gabriel Suazo’s starting spot, yet he is seeking terms Sevilla cannot meet while managing debt and a strict cost-cutting plan. The club is determined to avoid repeating past oversized contracts, with sustainability prioritised over short-term needs.

Sevilla have a safeguard in place for the summer window. After Oso passed the required appearance threshold, his release clause rose automatically from 15 to 20 million euros, giving the club breathing space and the option of an immediate cash injection if a sale hits that figure. Recent interest from Lionel Scaloni in the youngster for Argentina has further boosted his profile.

Elsewhere in the academy, Sevilla have tied down Miguel Sierra until 30 June 2029. The 21-year-old winger from Granada made his first-team debut this season and featured in the derby against Real Betis.

The contrast underlines the challenge of managing young talent amid intense institutional and sporting pressure. With the team still working to move clear of relegation, these decisions will frame Sevilla’s summer market. The coming weeks will show whether Oso stays or whether the club must listen to offers.
