According to Glorioso 1904, FIFA has lifted Nicolás Otamendi’s suspension, clearing the Benfica captain to be considered for Argentina’s World Cup opener. The decision arrives before what is expected to be the final World Cup of his career.
The centre-back was sent off in the final South American qualifier against Ecuador for bringing down Enner Valencia as the striker bore down on goal. He received a straight red card and a one-match ban.
FIFA has approved an amnesty linked to a World Cup rule change, after accepting a request from the Argentine Football Association. It means the experienced defender can feature from the start of the tournament against Algeria on 16 June.
The timing is significant for Lionel Scaloni, with Argentina managing defensive issues ahead of the competition. Lisandro Martínez and Cristian Romero have also been affected by recent suspensions and injuries.
Otamendi was recently dismissed in a controversial incident for Benfica in the draw with Famalicão. The 38-year-old will miss Monday’s home game against Braga on 11 May at Estádio da Luz.
