Celtic will clash heads with St Mirren again next weekend in the Scottish Cup semifinal. But the fixture this afternoon was more crucial, considering the league’s competitiveness amid a three-horse title race. It was another unconvincing performance from Martin O’Neill’s men, but they got the job done yet again, thanks to an early strike from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Below are the Celtic players rated in their 1-0 win against St Mirren.

Viljami Sinisalo: 6.5

Denied the Buddies with a smart save early into the game. Had a comfortable outing otherwise, as the visitors failed to threaten enough in the Hoops’ defence.

Anthony Ralston: 7.5

Got a nod down the right amid injuries to Julian Araujo, Alistair Johnston and Colby Donovan. Despite not being O’Neill’s preferred choice, the fullback found a balance between attack and defence.

Auston Trusty: 7.5

Impressed with his ball-playing traits. Combated the duels against Mikael Mandron, Jonah Ayunga and later Jake Young in the heart of the backline.

Liam Scales: 7

Made some timely blocks, interceptions and clearances en route to defending the lead and securing a league clean sheet for the first time since their 2-0 win against Falkirk on February 1st.

Kieran Tierney: 7

Was solid at the back, but the Scotsman could have offered more with his overlapping runs, crosses and cut-ins from the left-hand flank.

Callum McGregor: 7

Did his job by marshalling the backline and scripting attacking transitions from deep down the midfield. Made way for Reo Hatate with around 20 minutes remaining.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain: 8

Was lively in the centre of the pitch as he not only scored the decisive first-half goal but also created several chances before making way for Luke McCowan late in the game.

Hyun-Jun Yang: 6.5

His flair and finesse were missing from the right, except for tricky runs and link-up play in and around the attacking third.

Benjamin Nygren: 6.5

Impressed with his dribbles and through balls. Lost a few duels in the middle of the park and was eventually replaced by Arne Engels, who returned from a long injury layoff.

Daizen Maeda: 6

Another below-par performance from the Japanese forward, with little attacking threat while featuring from the left-hand flank.

Tomas Cvancara: 6.5

Had an effort denied by Ryan Mullen. Tried to contribute by dropping deep and winning the ball back. But the lack of firepower up top saw him being taken off for Kelechi Iheanacho around the hour mark.

Celtic Subs vs St Mirren

Kelechi Iheanacho: 6.5

Looked lively since coming on, but missed an opportunity to double the lead soon after his introduction.

Arne Engels: 6

Massive minutes for the Belgian, as the gaffer needs his vision, technicality and midfield mastery for the title push.

Luke McCowan: 6

Calmed things down in the centre of the pitch as the focus was to retain possession and defend the lead.
