Ricardo Aimar, father of former Benfica player Pablo Aimar, has died aged 78. The Argentine Football Association said in a statement that it offered its deepest condolences to the family.
The message, issued on behalf of president Claudio Tapia and the executive committee, confirmed the death and expressed sympathy.
Ricardo Aimar also worked in football as a player and coach, linked to regional sides Estudiantes de Río Cuarto, Belgrano de Río Cuarto and Club Atlético Belgrano Norte.
The loss comes in a period already difficult for Pablo, whose mother died shortly before the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.
Pablo Aimar is currently Lionel Scaloni’s assistant with Argentina’s senior team. His club career included River Plate and Valencia, along with a spell at Benfica.
He played 179 official matches and scored 17 goals for Benfica between 2008 and 2013, winning one Campeonato Nacional in 2009/10 and four Taças da Liga from 2008/09 to 2011/12.
