Lucas Paquetá landed in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday morning to complete medicals and sign for Flamengo, greeted by hundreds of supporters, according to Globo.com.
The 28-year-old stopped to meet fans, taking phones for photos and videos and spending around 20 minutes with the crowd.
Speaking to Flamengo TV, he said the club might not have needed him but he needed Flamengo, stressing his bond with the supporters and intent to show it on the pitch.
After arriving he underwent tests before heading to Ninho do Urubu. If his registration appears on the CBF BID by Friday, he could debut on Sunday against Corinthians in the Supercopa do Brasil. He admitted he is anxious to play and wants to bring joy to the fanbase.
Flamengo agreed a deal with West Ham on Wednesday after weeks of talks. He returns eight years after leaving on a five-year contract, a record signing for the club and for Brazilian football at 42 million euros, R$ 260 million.
Paquetá highlighted his versatility and desire to help wherever he is used. He has missed recent West Ham games due to back discomfort and asked to sit out training and matches, and Flamengo believe the issue should not prevent him from playing. This season he has 19 appearances with five goals and one assist, last playing on 6 January.
