The Paris prosecutor's office opened a judicial investigation on Tuesday for racist insults against a France player, after Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla targeted Kylian Mbappé, according to L'Équipe.
The case will be followed by the Pôle national de lutte contre la haine en ligne and has been assigned to the Office central de lutte contre les crimes contre l'humanité et les crimes de haine. The offence carries a maximum one year in prison and a €45,000 fine.
Amarilla's comments followed France's 1-0 last-16 win over Paraguay at the World Cup. She described Mbappé as a colonised Cameroonian pretending to be French, labelled him resentful, nouveau riche, arrogant and ugly, and used dehumanising references to coconuts and chimpanzees.
Mbappé replied that she was a contemptible woman unworthy of her office, and said her reckless and unashamed racism had eclipsed the historic effort of Paraguay's players by projecting the worst image of her country.
Amarilla later offered a half-apology, while demanding an apology from the Real Madrid star and threatening legal action for gender-based violence if he did not comply.
The attacks on Mbappé prompted widespread support. The remarks were condemned by French President Emmanuel Macron and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, and Paraguay's government distanced itself. The FFF filed a report to the prosecutor for judicial proceedings.
