Manchester United signed Patrick Dorgu from Lecce close to a year ago, and the youngster has come into his own in the past few weeks. Initially deployed as a wing-back under former head coach Ruben Amorim, the Dane scored his first goal for the Red Devils in the hard-fought 1-0 win over Newcastle United at the end of last year.

Dorgu was pushed into an attacking role in recent times amid the absence of Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo due to their involvement in AFCON. The 21 year old did not disappoint and even retained his position in the team under interim manager Darren Fletcher as well as caretaker manager Michael Carrick.

In the English manager’s first game in charge against Manchester City last weekend, Dorgu scored his second goal of the season, helping United to a memorable 2-0 win in the Premier League. Statistics indicate that he is now one of the league’s most in-form players.

Unplayable since Christmas!

According to Opta, as cited by United’s official website, Dorgu has created 11 chances since Christmas, the second-most in the league and level with Bruno Fernandes, which is an achievement in itself.

The Dane also ranks among the top players in the league when combining shots and chances created in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Dorgu has also added a bit of physicality to the Red Devils and has not shied away from a battle on the pitch. Since Christmas last year, only Neco Williams has been fouled more often than the Dane, highlighting his rising impact on the pitch.

Meanwhile, Elliot Anderson (50) and James Tarkowski (48) are the only players who have won more duels than Dorgu (45) during that period. The Dane has also won back possession 33 times since 25 December, with only Anderson (43), James Garner (40) and Yehor Yarmoliuk (34) surpassing him.

Dorgu aiming to be more attacking

When informed about his attacking impact, Dorgu told United’s website: “No [I didn’t know that], I think, obviously when you play higher up, you have more freedom. You are higher up the pitch, so you are closer to their goal, so it’s easier to create chances and get forward.”

“So, yeah, I just enjoy playing there. Hopefully, I’ll be even more attacking in the coming games and help the team score goals or get assists.”

“I like to get in the box, I like to score goals. I like to get assists. I like to help my team defend as well. We need to do everything together. Even if I’m playing as a winger, I will still always do the defensive job because I’ve been a defender before.”

Speaking about his physicality, the youngster said: “It’s obviously one of my attributes. I’m really strong, so I just try to put my body in there and get tackles and try to win the ball back as quick as possible.”

An eventful first year at Old Trafford

The Dane also reflected on his time at Old Trafford as he closes in on his first year at the club. He said: “It’s one of the biggest teams in the world, so every minute you get, you need to be proud of it. And just me being on the pitch is a blessing for me, so I just try to work on my game, game by game, and just have fun out there.”

“Yeah, I would say I feel at home. One year, it’s a long time, so I feel comfortable now in this team and in the country. I feel good and I think this year has been really good to me. I’ve learned a lot, I’ve improved a lot as a player as well. I just need to keep being happy and keep working on myself, and to improve game by game.”

Final Thoughts

Dorgu has been one of United’s most important players in the past few weeks, improving his attacking impetus as well as his defensive discipline. With Luke Shaw already on the wrong side of 30, the Dane could become the Englishman’s long-term replacement at Old Trafford.
