Patrick Roberts has joined Birmingham City on a permanent deal after an outstanding loan under head coach Chris Davies.

He was due to be out of contract in the summer, with Sunderland holding an option. The club said in a statement that he has finalised a long-term move to St Andrews for an undisclosed fee.

Roberts, 28, leaves as a pivotal figure, helping win two Wembley play-off campaigns and restoring Sunderland to the Premier League. He made 147 appearances after arriving from Manchester City in January 2022, with nine goals and 18 assists.

Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman called it a perfect ending, saying Roberts is settled, performing and held in high esteem by supporters.

Roberts said he was eager to complete the move, is pleased with recent form and wants to kick on. He hopes to show fans more over the next few months and two years, and believes January signings will lift competition.

Earlier, Leo Hjelde joined Sheffield United on loan for the rest of the season. Three further deals could follow before the 7pm deadline, with Adil Aouchiche close to Schalke, potentially freeing an international loan slot.

That could pave the way for Simon Adingra to join AS Monaco on an initial loan with an option to buy around €17.5 million, including a seven-figure loan fee if it proceeds. Sunderland would then look to sign Nilsun Angulo from Anderlecht for about £15 million, with a medical overseas. Clubs can gain an extra two hours if a deal sheet is filed before 7pm.
