Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi continues to enhance his reputation on the biggest stage after playing another commanding role in Spain’s 2-0 victory over France in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final.
The Barcelona centre-back helped Luis de la Fuente’s side secure a place in the World Cup final, where Spain will face either England or Argentina.
Despite being only 19 years old, the Barcelona youngster has looked remarkably composed in one of football’s most demanding positions, leading Spain’s defence with authority throughout the competition.
Alongside experienced defender Aymeric Laporte, the Barcelona academy graduate has helped build the strongest defensive record in the competition, with Spain conceding just one goal on their road to the final.

Against France, widely regarded as one of the most dangerous attacking teams in the tournament, Cubarsi delivered another mature display.
His positioning, anticipation and calmness in possession allowed Spain to control the game, while the French attack struggled to create clear opportunities.
Speaking after Spain qualified for the FIFA World Cup final, Cubarsi reflected on what the achievement means to the squad.
“We’re really excited. It’s the result of the magnificent work we’ve been putting in over the last few months.
“We’re one big family, and the competitiveness within the team makes you a better player,” he said.

While many have praised Pau Cubarsi’s World Cup performances, the young defender insists he is focused only on improving rather than enjoying the growing attention.
The Barcelona defender admitted that he is still processing what he has achieved during the tournament, having already established himself as one of Spain’s defensive leaders.
“I always try to improve both in training and in matches and to keep my feet on the ground.
“I’m doing well, but that doesn’t mean I have to slow down; rather, I need to keep going and always help the team,” he added.
