Paul Merson speaking as Newcastle United are preparing for their next match.
A 4.30pm kick-off on Sunday afternoon.
Newcastle United looking to make it five wins in a row.
A massive match at St James’ Park games remaining.
Paul Merson discussing the possibilities for Newcastle United in their home match against Man U, as United look to add Champions League qualification to silverware.
Merson believing that if Newcastle can win today and against Palace on Wednesday night, then they will go on to get Champions League qualification.
If United do win these next two matches, they are guaranteed to be in third place by the close of business on Wednesday night, with six games remaining. They’d be two points ahead of Forest and four ahead of Man City.
Paul Merson talking to Sportskeeda ahead of Newcastle United v Man U:
“Manchester United will frustrate Newcastle United but I still think the Magpies will win this game.
“Even though Man U have shown signs of improvement under Ruben Amorim, I don’t think have it in them to get a win here.
“The race for top four is getting tighter and tighter, meaning Newcastle cannot afford to slip up.
“Eddie Howe has done enough already in my opinion.
“Winning that cup was everything for this club.
“Now getting a top five finish would be the icing on the cake and they are so nearly there as well!!
“If they win this game and get another three points in their game in hand [home to Palace on Wednesday], I think they will finish in the top five.
“Prediction: Newcastle United 2 Man U 0”
So is Paul Merson on the right track here?
Well, can’t disagree with much he has to say, only one thing really.
I also think that Man U will set out to defend deep and frustrate Newcastle, with United still able to win.
However, whilst obviously getting that trophy was huge, getting Champions League qualification would be more than just icing on our black and white cake. Having got into such a great position with six weeks of the season remaining, it is crucial really that Newcastle do get Champions League football, if we are to rapidly progress as a club, on and off the pitch.
