Kobbie Mainoo’s recent change of fortunes at Manchester United is one of the most intriguing side stories of Ruben Amorim’s reign.

The Englishman was hailed as the next big thing after breaking into the starting XI under former manager Erik ten Hag. Composed, classy, with tremendous abilities on the ball, he instantly became the darling of the Old Trafford faithful.

For a club that takes pride in developing young talent, Mainoo was the star of the show. The 20-year-old midfielder was tipped to become the centre of the Red Devils’ next squad rebuild.

Mainoo grew in prominence with each passing game and even broke into the Three Lions squad. He was so influential that he started the Euro 2024 final against Spain, which England unfortunately lost 2-1.

However, it has been a downward drive for the Academy graduate ever since.

Mainoo wanted to leave this summer

Ten Hag’s departure from the hot seat at Old Trafford in October last year immensely affected Mainoo’s involvement with the first team. The youngster was soon in and out of the first team under Amorim, and only made the bench for the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Englishman had concerns about his game time since the start of the year, which is why he reportedly asked to leave the Theatre of Dreams this summer.

The Red Devils refused to let him go, however.

Unfortunately, Mainoo has started just one of United’s first five games this season, which was in the EFL Cup defeat to Grimsby Town. He has featured just twice in the Premier League, both of which were from the bench, and has clocked only 73 minutes of football in the league.

Mainoo was brought on in the 62nd minute against Manchester City last weekend, but failed to have an impact as United lost 3-0.

Club legend Paul Scholes has now advised the player to seek clarity about his situation from Amorim.

Mainoo’s contract expires in 2027

Like Mainoo, Scholes also rose through the ranks at Old Trafford and knows all about the rigours of playing for United.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad, and The Football podcast, the former English midfielder said: “After a couple of games where Bruno hasn’t played well, why isn’t he asking the question? Monday morning he should be in Amorim’s office demanding to know why he isn’t starting.”

Mainoo’s contract runs until 2027, so unless his situation improves, the player may be reluctant to sign a new deal with the Red Devils. Recent reports have suggested that Real Madrid and Napoli are eyeing a move for the youngster in 2026.
