Chaves 0-2 Benfica
It was not particularly impressive but Benfica got the job done in their Portuguese Cup tie against second-tier Desportivo de Chaves in Trás-os-Montes tonight thanks to two terrific Vangelis Pavlidis goals.
The Greek striker scored early and late in the game, both times with superbly executed right-foot shots from outside the area.
Chaves, unbeaten in 2025/26 until today and mounting a strong promotion challenge, battled well against the Lisbon giants but could not take advantage of a few half-chances they created.
Benfica boss José Mourinho was not happy with his team’s display.
“We largely controlled the game but I’m not happy because the work we did for this game was different. We wanted more intensity in our attacking play and we were slow,” he said.
“But I like to talk about the opponents when they play well to make our job difficult. Chaves are a good team and Filipe is a great coach; they were very well organised. It’s not easy playing against a line of five at the back and four more in front of them, as we saw with many examples in the recent international games,” added Mourinho.
His opposite number, Filipe Martins, said he did not regret rotating his team for the game, explaining that the main objective of Chaves is promotion back to the Primeira Liga.
“We gave a good image of Chaves as a team and tonight I had confirmation that I can count on all the players in the squad to contribute.”
