Lubo Penev has been fighting a serious illness that kept him in a German hospital for more than two months. He is now in Bulgaria under specialist care.
"I am in the hands of good specialists and I hope to return to coaching soon. I am well, following the doctors’ recovery plan, looking after myself and I feel great," he said, speaking to SER Deportivos Valencia.
"There has been no financial help in Spain. Besides, nobody is obliged to help," Penev said. "CSKA Sofia, relatives and Bulgarian citizens have contributed because my illness requires expensive treatment."
"I have only spoken with Fernando Giner from Valencia people. I saw reports and called him to thank him for the support," he added. "It has been exaggerated a lot. It seemed as if I was already in the trunk, but nobody has asked me how I am."
Fernando Giner, president of the Valencia Footballers’ Association, said: "The situation is complicated and we are doing everything possible to help. From the first moment we have followed the steps indicated from Bulgaria, and many people, team-mates and clubs, wanted to help by raising funds for his treatments."
"We did not want to publicise every call with the family, we wanted to raise the money and send it when needed. All funds are in an account exclusively for Lubo and must be paid against hospital or treatment invoices. He only has to say ‘here is the invoice’ and it will be paid. One was paid by CSKA, but he must continue treatment and the money is there," Giner said.
