Manchester City may not need to invest in a new big-money right-back this summer, Sergio Aguero has insisted, with two solutions at Pep Guardiola’s disposal.

The club legend’s latest verdict comes amid mounting speculation over City’s transfer strategy following the departure of Kyle Walker to Burnley earlier this summer. Walker, who played a key leadership role under Guardiola, has left a void in the defensive line despite his faltering performances over his final two seasons at the club.

Manchester City have been heavily linked with potential right-back reinforcements in recent weeks, including Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento. However, no move has yet materialised, and internal solutions could take priority as the club balances the squad across multiple positions.

The 2025/26 pre-season campaign is likely to hint at Pep Guardiola’s interest in testing existing players in largely unfamiliar roles, including midfielders being deployed in defensive slots and continued work in developing Matheus Nunes in the position.

Sergio Aguero, who remains close to developments at the Etihad Stadium and frequently offers insight into his former club, has now voiced confidence that City already have adequate cover in place while singling out one talent and one senior squad member as fitting choices.

Speaking during his latest interview with Stake.com, Aguero has pointed towards two solutions for Pep Guardiola as he looks to fulfil the right-back slot in his side away from Kyle Walker.

“I’ve read [about Tino Livramento], but nothing solid has materialised yet,” the former Argentina international striker insisted.

He continued, “There’s Rico Lewis on that spot right now, and Pep [Guardiola] has used Matheus Nunes as well, with solid results.

“I think there’s still some debate as to whether that position needs to be reinforced or not.”

Pep Guardiola has long favoured versatility in players, and Matheus Nunes’ use as an inverted full-back during the latter half of last season reflected a broader tactical shift. The Portuguese star, typically a central midfielder, was trusted in a defensive capacity during key matches and responded with energetic, composed performances.

Meanwhile, 20-year-old Rico Lewis continues to grow in stature at the Etihad while already establishing himself as a full England international and UEFA Champions League winner, proving he can slot into a right-back or inverted midfield role seamlessly.

His intelligence on the ball and understanding of positional play have drawn praise from Pep Guardiola on multiple occasions and may well position him as the natural successor to Walker, should no new signing be made.

That said, City are not ruling out strengthening the position before the window closes. While names like Livramento remain on the radar, the club are also considering long-term plans.
