Erling Haaland’s second-half brace lifted Manchester City to a 2-nil win over Everton at the Etihad Stadium yesterday. Haaland’s goals knocked the stuffing out of Everton, and ensured that City extended their unbeaten run to eight matches in all competitions. Erling Haaland has been in sublime form to start the season. He has already scored 14 goals this season and has scored Manchester City’s last seven goals in all competitions. In Haaland, City have a weapon that their rivals do not. While Haaland is in superb form, Pep Guardiola pointed out a problem with his team that must be rectified. City needs other players to step up and start scoring goals.

Pep Guardiola wants to see other players step up and start taking their chances.

Speaking after his team’s win over Everton in their Premier League fixture at the Etihad yesterday, Pep Guardiola praised Erling Haaland’s match-defining performance. But he also made a point of saying that he wants to see other players step up and start taking their chances. Regarding the need for other players to start scoring goals,  Pep Guardiola said: “Erling could have scored four or five in the end. Our key man, what can I say? At the same time, we can’t rely on him.

We want to do good things, not just Erling. The wingers, the attacking midfielders and the other players have to make a step up.

The chances that we create are so clear, and they have to score goals.

Savinho had two, Jeremy had two, Tijjani had two. They have to score at that level.

Manchester City have players capable of easing the burden on Erling Haaland.

Pep Guardiola is right. Manchester City need other players to step up and ease the goalscoring burden on Erling Haaland. The fact that Halaand is banging in the goals isn’t an issue. Haaland is in the form of his life. But it isn’t sustainable for Manchester City to be so reliant on Haaland’s goals over the course of a full season. It is time for Haaland’s teammates to put their chances away.

Savinho, Jeremy Doku and Tijjani Reijnders had their chances to score yesterday against Everton. Each player squandered those opportunities. Scoring goals consistently is an area of the game that Savinho and Doku must improve in. Tijjani Reijnders is a proven goalscorer from midfield; he just hasn’t had a lot of luck in front of goal to begin this season. Oscar Bobb needs to be more ruthless in the final third, as Pep Guardiola pointed out recently. The return from injury of Omar Marmoush and Rayan Cherki should give Manchester City extra goalscoring options. Phil Foden is a proven goalscorer, but he is playing a deeper role in midfield. There are other goalscoring options in the City squad outside of Erling Haaland. The players named now need to hit the back of the net to give City a better-rounded attack.

The good sign for Manchester City is that they are creating chances for players outside of Erling Haaland. Those chances just haven’t been taken. That wastefulness is a problem Pep Guardiola pointed out after yesterday’s match. The sooner it is rectified by the City players, the better Pep Guardiola’s side will become.
