Willy Gnonto could yet work under Pep Guardiola, amid reports of discussions over the Italy head coach role.

According to Sky Sports in Italy, talks with Guardiola are believed to have taken place in Barcelona regarding the national team job, and while any agreement is unclear there is optimism.

The 22-year-old has not played for Italy since the month after Leeds were relegated in 2023, and he has been in and out under Daniel Farke. Last season, only four of his 23 Premier League appearances were starts. Italy’s failure to reach the 2026 World Cup ended any slim tournament hopes and Gennaro Gattuso left in April after 10 months in charge.

For any international return, Gnonto first needs regular club minutes, yet a recall under Guardiola would be a major opportunity. It would also echo Gary Neville’s 2023 view that Gnonto looked every inch a Manchester City-style winger, praised for maturity and decision-making.

Gnonto impressed in his first Leeds season, scoring against West Ham and Manchester United and catching the eye during a 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa in January 2023. His future at Elland Road remains uncertain this summer, with limited minutes an ongoing frustration. Signed for £3.8million in 2022, he is among fringe players who could bring profit to Leeds while considering a move for game-time.
