The two title favourites clash at the Etihad on Sunday

Pep Guardiola expects Arsenal to be Manchester City's key title rivals for "many years" thanks to the work of Mikel Arteta, but has fired a warning to his former assistant.

Premier League champions City welcome the Gunners to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday in a huge early test of their title credentials. For the past two seasons, City have held off the Gunners in close title races so the weekend result is expected to have a huge say at the end of the campaign.

Guardiola, speaking after being held by Inter Milan to a 0-0 draw in the opening round of the Champions League, expects another difficult test but says City have themselves improved.

"I don’t know the idea of Mikel of how they’re going to play. I’ll have to read it and adapt it.

"But it’s another unbelievable team, they defend really well, they don’t concede chances, they don’t concede goals, they are really good in many aspects, they control everything.

"They’ve been the biggest challenge, title contenders the last two seasons they are there and they will be there for many years because they create a deeper squad, a young team.

"So it’s another good test but we are in September, so I like to see the team, many things we are better than the past, even better than the past how we’ve done it, we’ll see what happens on Sunday."
