Manchester United fans have been labelled as having a “lack of class” by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola over chants directed towards Phil Foden on Sunday.
Two of the Premier League’s most underperforming sides this season clashed at Old Trafford in top-flight action over the course of the weekend, and a largely drab and underwhelming affair resulted in a point apiece following a 0-0 draw.
The result in Trafford leaves further question marks over Ruben Amorim’s side’s ability to finish in the top-half of the Premier League this season, and whether Manchester City can secure themselves a UEFA Champions League spot for the following campaign.
Perhaps most of the talking after the game centred around events away from the pitch, as Manchester City’s Phil Foden was the subject of vile chanting aimed towards his family, with the Etihad’s number 47 reacting far from pleased upon hearing the words put to him.
Speaking during his post-match press conference after City’s 0-0 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford, Pep Guardiola was quizzed on distasteful chants aimed by sections of the Old Trafford faithful towards Phil Foden and his mother.
“Lack of class,” Guardiola told the media during his post-match media conference at the weekend.
He continued, “But it’s not United, it’s the people, you know? We are so exposed in the screen in world football – managers, owners, and football players especially.
“Honestly, I don’t understand the mind of the people involving the mum of Phil, it’s a lack of integrity, class, and they should be ashamed.”
Phil Foden is enduring a troublesome season throughout the Manchester City squad, suffering a significant drop-off in performance standards after his Premier League and PFA Player of the Season-winning campaign of 2023/24.
The Stockport-born playmaker largely drove Manchester City towards their history-making fourth consecutive Premier League title during the last season, with numerous big moments in front of goal during the run-in in particular.
It remains to be seen whether Foden can be the player Manchester City can once again turn to during the final matches of the ongoing season, with plenty still to compete for in the Premier League and final four of the FA Cup.
