Reid entered to the 'Cheer Up Peter Reid' anthem, the room rising to sing a thunderous welcome. The programme mixed laughs with poignancy, including his devotion to Everton and his bond with the late Bradley Lowery.

Reid said the night felt like an emotional rollercoaster, recalling big laughs, powerful memories and genuinely touching moments. He called the anthem reception unforgettable, thanked supporters for deeply personal stories, and said Sunderland and its people will always hold a huge place in his heart. He added that he has enjoyed the club’s recent progress and getting back to matches.

The weekend also brought a visit to his former assistant Bobby Saxton, known as Sacko, recalling a partnership that steered Sunderland from Roker Park to the Stadium of Light.

To close the night, host Paul Goffy Gough presented a Sunderland-themed cake and champagne, plus a framed montage of Reid’s years in charge. For many, it felt a heartfelt tribute to a figure whose impact still resonates.
