Manchester City have confirmed that Phil Foden has signed a new long-term contract, extending his stay at the Etihad Stadium until 2030 with the option of a further 12 months.

The new agreement underlines City’s faith in the England international despite two challenging seasons in which injuries and inconsistent form limited his influence.

Foden’s previous deal had been due to expire next summer, prompting speculation over his long-term future.

City have moved to secure one of their most successful academy graduates as a key part of manager Enzo Maresca’s plans for the years ahead.

Negotiations over a new contract had been ongoing for several months before an agreement was finally reached.

“Committing my future to City means everything to me,” Foden said.

“Playing for this club is all I’ve ever wanted to do, and it’s always an honour to wear the shirt.”

“It’s not lost on me that I’ve been lucky enough to be part of a historic period with so many titles won, but we’re always looking to the future and trying to win more.”

The 26-year-old has spent his entire career at City after joining the club’s academy as a child.

He progressed through the youth ranks before making his senior breakthrough under Pep Guardiola and has since become one of the most decorated academy graduates in the club’s history.

Although Foden struggled to replicate the outstanding form that earned him individual honours during the 2023-24 campaign, City have continued to back him.

He made 50 appearances in all competitions last season but was in and out of the starting line-up.

Foden also endured disappointment on the international stage after missing out on Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for this summer’s World Cup.

The midfielder previously admitted the mental and physical challenges of the past two years had affected his performances.

City are convinced he can return to his best.

The new contract reflects the club’s confidence that Foden will once again become one of the Premier League’s standout creative players as he enters what should be the peak years of his career.
