Sunderland sealed a Europa League spot with a 2-1 home win over Chelsea on Sunday, the final day of the campaign. Sunderland Echo reports that Phil Smith issued the following ratings.

Goalkeeper Robin Roefs made a smart early save from Palmer and distributed well, but he may feel he should have kept out Palmer’s effort from the edge of the area after getting a hand to it. He received six.

Right-back Lutsharel Geertruida took up excellent positions in the first half and Chelsea struggled to track him. He was solid defensively in the second half when the going stiffened, and he was rated at eight.

Centre-back Nordi Mukiele rose to the big occasion, dominated his duels and offered a threat going forward. He has had a superb season and looks among Sunderland’s best signings, earning nine.

Luke O'Nien returned to the XI with an aggressive, tidy display. A fine pass through the lines featured in the build-up to the second goal, and he was marked at eight.
