Winning the Super Bowl is the ultimate achievement in American football. But for Autumn Lockwood, Sunday night’s victory was more than a team milestone. The Philadelphia Eagles’ associate performance coach became the first Black woman coach to win an NFL championship.
Super Bowl LIX saw the Eagles determined to dethrone the Kansas City Chiefs, who were eyeing a third consecutive title. The win for Philadelphia underscores the countless hours invested by players and coaches. Lockwood’s involvement is a historic accomplishment and a testament to the dedication, innovation, and breakthrough moments that make sports so enduring.
The Philadelphia Eagles appointed Lockwood as their associate performance coach during the 2023 offseason. Previously, she worked on the strength and conditioning team during the Eagles’ 2022 season. But even before then, Lockwood was no stranger to being a woman in a sport predominantly dominated by men.
Her first job in the NFL came in 2019 when she joined the Atlanta Falcons as an intern to their strength staff after gaining a wealth of experience in collegiate sports. Her accolades continued to impress as she was named assistant director for the East Tennessee State University basketball program during 2020/21 and director of sports performance at the University of Houston in 2021/22.
Lockwood has contributed to UNLV and East Tennessee State University, helping with football and basketball programs between 2017 and 2021, and being an assistant strength coach to the University of Arizona Olympic team in 2017.
Lockwood is making waves with her huge milestone for women in the sport. As the first Black woman coach to win a Super Bowl, her achievement is turning heads everywhere. She is one of only four female coaches to reach this milestone in the NFL.
Her breakthrough shatters stereotypes and inspires young women and girls to aim high. Lockwood’s success proves that no glass ceiling is too high in this ever-changing landscape. Let her milestone fuel dreams and open doors for future generations.
