Pierre Sage eyes Franck Haise records as RC Lens chase history after nine straight wins in all competitions. Auxerre visit on Saturday afternoon.
According to L'Équipe, the streak has even sparked debate among club historians, who argue it is not unprecedented. In 1960, Lens put together six top-flight wins and four in the Coupe Charles Drago to reach 10.
Sage has since conceded he misspoke after the 3-0 win at Sochaux on 11 January, when he believed Lens had made history. He said it would only truly be historic if they hit 10 in a row.
Right-back Ruben Aguilar has returned from a muscle injury and says the squad want to meet the challenges ahead. Sage has set short-term markers, needing four wins to reach 52 points and seven more overall, with Lens on 40 before matchday 18.
Lens are taking 2.35 points per match and boast Ligue 1’s best defence, with 13 conceded in 17 games. At that rate they would finish with 26 against, bettering the 29 that underpinned the league’s best defence in 2022-23.
Beat Auxerre and Sage’s side would confirm their place in the club’s annals, then target surpassing Haise’s 10 successive home wins at Bollaert-Delelis from 7 August 2022 to 14 January 2023, with the current run at seven. Paris-SG edged them by one point in 2022-23 despite seven Ligue 1 defeats.
