Plata struck by elbow as VAR stays silent in Flamengo v Botafogo | OneFootball

Flamengo and Botafogo’s Carioca quarter-final at Engenhão on Sunday 15 featured an early flashpoint involving Gonzalo Plata.

According to Coluna Do Fla, eight minutes into the first half Plata and Bastos contested a high ball. The Botafogo defender’s elbow caught the Flamengo forward’s head. Referee Bruno Arleu de Araújo, close to the incident, showed only a yellow card and the VAR did not call a review.

Flamengo struggled in the first phase, finishing fourth in Group B. Botafogo topped the same group, which handed them home advantage for this tie.

If Flamengo win, they will progress to a two-legged semi-final against Madureira. Madureira beat Boavista 2-1 on Friday 13.

Should they then defeat Madureira, Flamengo would reach the final to chase a third successive Carioca. Potential opponents there are Vasco, Fluminense or Bangu.
