Ross Stewart's last-minute penalty sent Southampton into the FA Cup quarter-finals with a disciplined counter-attacking win at Fulham. It was hardly a giant-killing, but it was ruthless at Craven Cottage.
According to Sainstmarching.com, the visitors lined up in a four-two-three-one and several defenders excelled. Daniel Peretz commanded his area and denied Ryan Sessegnon at point-blank range, while James Bree contained Samuel Chukwueze and made 12 clearances.
Taylor Harwood-Bellis delivered the game's standout defensive display, man of the match after four blocked shots, three clearances, two tackles and a key interception. Nathan Wood was steady alongside him with six clearances, and Ryan Manning was strong in the tackle.
In midfield Flynn Downes was involved throughout, passing well and collecting a yellow card for dissent. Caspar Jander erred with a first-half cross-field pass, then raced back covering 50 yards to block the resulting effort before later making way for Cameron Bragg.
Tom Fellows struggled to escape Sessegnon and overhit a first-half cross, while Leo Scienza missed a one-on-one. Scienza still showed quality, carrying through the middle to send Finn Azaz through before the break.
After the interval Fellows spurned a good opening. Azaz then won the late penalty that Stewart converted.
Cyle Larin led the line superbly, holding the ball up and fronting most counters. From the bench, Bragg, Kuryu Matsuki, Samuel Edozie and Stewart all featured.
