At the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, Lazio booked their place in the Coppa Italia semi-final by knocking Bologna off their perch.
The title holders broke the deadlock in the first half through Santiago Castro, but Tijjani Noslin restored parity after the interval. The tie had to be decided by penalty shootouts, and it proved to be a surprisingly easy mission for Maurizio Sarri’s men, who didn’t even need a fifth spot-kick, as the contest was already settled at 4-1.
Here are our player ratings for Lazio, who eliminated Bologna from the Coppa Italia thanks to their flawless spot-kick execution.
Ivan Provedel – 6
The Goalkeeper made a solid save on Nicolo Cambiaghi’s early attempt, but was a bit too slow in his reaction to Castro’s opener. Denied Lewis Ferguson’s spot-kick to give Lazio an early advantage in the shootouts.
Adam Marusic – 7
The Montenegrin produced one of his finest displays in recent memory. Shut down Cambiaghi and then Federico Bernardeschi, instigated the equalizer with a sublime long ball, and scored the third spot-kick for the Biancocelesti.
Mario Gila – 5.5
The Spaniard endured a torrid first half, as he picked up an avoidable booking, wasted possession with inaccurate passes, and most importantly, allowed Castro to sneak ahead of him on the opener. At least he improved after the break.
Alessio Romagnoli – 7
The experienced Italian showed the experience and composure that render him instrumental for Lazio. Dealt comfortably with all sorts of danger, and picked up his teammates with cool passes.
Luca Pellegrini – 6.5
A decent showing from the Roman, although it ended with him getting nutmegged by Riccardo Orsolini. Nevertheless, he had the upper hand on the winger for the bulk of the contest, and picked up Dele-Bashiru with an exquisite long ball.
Fisayo Dele-Bashiru – 6.5
The Nigerian midfielder should have done better when receiving Pellegrini’s vertical pass, but he made amends by providing the assist for the equalizer.
Nicolo Rovella – 6
The Regista’s return to the lineup was a welcome sight, but he still needs time to regain his form and reestablish himself as the team’s lynchpin. He was stationed a bit too deep to influence the attacking play.
Kenneth Taylor – 6.5
The Dutchman ran more than any other player on the pitch, and offered a vital contribution in the defensive phase, but he still has to improve his touch. He’ll remember this game fondly after scoring the decisive spot-kick.
Gustav Isaksen – 6
The Dane extended his positive run with another convincing display. He tormented Joao Miranda with his relentless runs, but his performance lacked a highlight.
Daniel Maldini – 6
The versatile attacker is happy to put himself at the team’s disposal, working extremely hard to retrieve the ball. Showed some moments of brilliance in the final third, but couldn’t inflict the damage.
Pedro – 6
The Spaniard was one of Lazio’s most influential players in the first half. Expertly picked up Maldini with a brilliant chip. But sadly, he sustained an agonizing injury before the half-time.
Tijjani Noslin – 7
The Dutchman might not be the most prolific goal-scorer, but he has a knack for stepping up at the big stage. In addition to scoring the all-important equalizer, he had a vibrant outing on the left wing.
Boulaye Dia – 6
An improved cameo from the Senegalese. Although he didn’t pose a threat on goal, he combined well with his teammates, tracked back, and helped launch a few counterattacks. He also took his spot-kick well.
Danilo Cataldi – 6
The experienced midfielder cut a calm and composed figure at a time when Lazio needed someone to shield the backline.
Nuno Tavares – 6.5
Another encouraging appearance from the Portuguese full-back, who caused problems for Bologna every time he darted forward. Had the nerves to take the first spot-kick of the shootouts.
Matteo Cancellieri – N/A
