Liverpool secured Champions League football after a 1-1 draw with Brentford at Anfield, though the afternoon belonged as much to emotion as it did to the Premier League table.
Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson both made their final appearances for the club, with Anfield rising repeatedly to honour two players who helped define a modern era at Liverpool. Arne Slot’s side needed a point to confirm fifth place and they eventually found enough composure to get over the line, even if familiar weaknesses resurfaced once again.
There was an unmistakable sense of occasion before kick-off. Salah, making his 442nd appearance, and Robertson, reaching 275 games, were central to everything around the ground. The football itself, however, remained tense and untidy.
Liverpool began brightly and nearly had the perfect moment in the 19th minute. Salah curled a free-kick around Brentford’s wall, only to see the ball strike the post with Caoimhin Kelleher beaten.
Brentford remained organised and dangerous on transition. Kevin Schade forced an excellent save from Alisson Becker midway through the first half, while Liverpool struggled to sustain pressure despite dominating possession.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 58th minute. Salah drifted into space and delivered a measured pass into Curtis Jones, who finished confidently in front of the Kop to give Liverpool a 1-0 lead.
It was fitting that Salah provided the assist. Across nine years at Liverpool, moments like these became routine. This one simply carried greater emotional weight.

Liverpool’s lead lasted only six minutes. Brentford worked the ball cleverly into the penalty area before Schade reacted quickest to level the match at 1-1.
Slot’s side looked uneasy after conceding and Brentford sensed an opportunity. Liverpool survived a handful of awkward moments late on, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate required to defend aggressively inside their own box.
The game paused emotionally in the 74th minute when Salah was substituted. Anfield rose together as the Egyptian left the pitch, visibly moved by the reception. Robertson received the same treatment when he departed nine minutes later.
For Brentford, the draw confirmed a disappointing finish to the campaign, with only one victory in their final 10 Premier League matches leaving European qualification out of reach.
Liverpool, meanwhile, secured their place back among Europe’s elite, though the broader questions surrounding consistency, control and direction under Slot remain unresolved heading into next season.
