Tottenham Hotspur will have ‘matching rights’ on Will Lankshear in the future, along with a sell-on clause, with figures of the deal set to take the striker to Middlesbrough emerging.

Boro pushed hard to try to win promotion from the Championship last season, but fell at the final playoffs hurdle and are now set to go again under Kim Hellberg.

The loss of key man Hayden Hackney has been a hard pill for Middlesbrough to swallow, however the capture of Lankshear will delight the Riverside faithful.

Regarded as an up and coming talent at Tottenham, having made his first team debut in the Europa League, Lankshear spent last term on loan at Oxford United.

Despite Oxford United being relegated, Lankshear made an impression and enjoyed his stint with the U’s.

His displays at Championship level did not go unnoticed and Middlesbrough have negotiated a deal with Tottenham to land him, with a medical now pending.

Spurs, in a sign of how highly they continue to think of Lankshear, will have matching rights in the deal to bring him back in future, while there will also be a sell-on clause.

Journalist Alasdair Gold wrote on X: “Will be a 20% sell-on clause included for Will Lankshear plus matching rights for Spurs for any future bids.

“The £20m package is looking like officially being termed as £10m guaranteed and another £10m in various add-ons.”

Lankshear’s departure will bring cash into the Tottenham coffers at a time when the club have splashed serious cash already this summer.

£100m was spent on Sandro Tonali, £85m on Mateus Fernandes and £52m on Jan Paul van Hecke, and Spurs are likely to go in for attackers soon.

Raising money through selling fringe players or talented youngsters unlikely to feature heavily in the upcoming season looks to be a priority.

Midfielder Lucas Bergvall is keen to go and he has been offered to Newcastle United, while winger Manor Solomon continues to be wanted by Fiorentina.

The Italian outfit, who had Solomon on loan, feel that Tottenham will have to lower their price for the winger later this summer.

There is also speculation over the future of Dejan Kulusevski, who has been offered to Fiorentina as an option.

With a stake in how Lankshear does in the future, Spurs will be keeping a close eye on his progress at Middlesbrough.
