Borussia Mönchengladbach’s winless start to the season extended to seven games after a 3-1 defeat away at Union Berlin. Following the vote of confidence by the new sporting director, Rouven Schröder, Eugen Polanski faced yet another setback as an interim coach.
“We were completely out of the game in the first 15 minutes,” said Polanski after the game. “More or less, we gave the game away right there. We conceded too many set pieces in the opening stages and didn't win any second balls.
“From the 55th minute onwards, we had a good phase, but we lacked the power and determination to score. I don't think we lost the game in the second half, but in the first quarter of an hour.”
Haris Tabaković scored Gladbach’s solitary goal as he continued to lead the line in the absence of last season’s top-scorer, Tim Kleindienst. “Ultimately, it wasn't enough to score,” said Tabaković. “The current situation is obviously not satisfactory for us. We now need to analyze the game and improve together in training day by day.”
Rocco Reitz also openly addressed the situation as one of the captains of the club. “In the end, it just wasn't good enough. When you lose 3-1, there's not much to sugarcoat. When you concede such easy goals and don't create enough chances for yourself, it becomes very difficult to win a game.”
