Second-division Paços de Ferreira and minnows Alpendorada were the headline makers this Saturday in the Portuguese Cup.
The former, still winless in 2025/26, forced the Portuguese champions and current holders of the Cup to extra time before succumbing to a 3-2 defeat. Twice Paços took the lead, through Ronaldo Lumungo and João Victor, but twice Sporting pulled level through Pedro Gonçalves and Fotis Ioannidis.
Despite heavy pressure Sporting were unable to score the winner in normal time, and it needed an own goal by Tiago Ferreira in extra time to settle the tie.
Meanwhile, third-tier Alpendorada went one better than Paços by coming from behind to beat top-flight club Estrela da Amadora 3-1 and earn a place in the last 32 of the competition.
Rodrigo Pinho put the visitors ahead, but a quick-fire brace either side of half time by Pedro Pauleta (not that one!) and Mário Borges gave the team from the region of Marco de Canaveses a shock victory.
Elsewhere, Porto had no trouble in seeing off CD Celoricense thanks to a Samu hat-trick and a goal by Jan Bednarek.
Braga were made to sweat by Bragança. An 84th-minute strike by Ricardo Horta proved the difference, and Santa Clara needed a penalty shootout to overcome SC Espinho.
