Things are not going well at Chelsea right now. Despite a great summer, tensions have come to the surface right away as the new campaign kicks off.

Enzo Maresca doesn’t seem happy with the summer business, the club once again spent big without getting much better, and that’s all being reflected in the results.

On Sky Sports yesterday, Miguel Delaney had some really interesting insight on the whole deal when asked whether Maresca’s job was under threat.

Maresca “potentially” under pressure

“Potentially, the results are forcing a look at the situation. Results coming from some strange decisions in recent weeks, I think the Man United game was an encapsulation of that, I think. The way he responded to the Sanchez red card, the Palmer situation,” Delaney said.

The coach’s response to red cards both last week and this week have drawn a lot of questions. The fact that co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali went into the dressing room after the defeat on Saturday is not a good sign either.

Plenty of rope left for under pressure boss

We still think Maresca has a lot of rope left. The success of getting into the Champions League, the Club World Cup win, the fact that he’s the chosen man of these sporting directors. It all gives him a lot of lives to lose. We had a dreadful run of a few months last season where results were really bad – and still all we ever heard were briefs about how much the owners were backing him.

But no coach goes on forever, and these owners have already shown they’re willing to pull the trigger if they think a Champions League place is at risk.

If results really go south, the temperature will only rise. Maresca needs to get wins under his belt, and soon.
