After a superb display on Tyneside last Saturday, City face the next phase of their relentless pursuit for silverware with a trip to the Santiago Bernabeu to face familiar foes Real Madrid on Wednesday.

City’s trip to St. James’ Park on Saturday saw the Blues maraud into the FA Cup quarter-final for an unprecedented eighth consecutive year – after what looked like a watered down starting 11 produced the goods in the north-east – and turning round a one-goal deficit to secure a dominant 3-1 win.

It was a tale of familiar haunting at the weekend after Harvey Barnes capitalised on a gulf of space to smash home a Newcastle opener with 18 minutes played.

However, after Savinho’s first FA Cup goal trickled over helpless Aaron Ramsdale’s goal-line, Omar Marmoush turned on the style to perpetuate his ongoing vendetta against Newcastle United, with a slick brace bringing his tally to seven goals against the Magpies in little over a year in English football.

25-man Manchester City squad spotted in training ahead of Real Madrid clash

A Manchester City side without the help of lynchpin starters Rodri, Marc Guehi and Erling Haaland among others entered their names into Monday’s quarter-final draw in some fashion.

But as one recurrent fixture comes to a close for the season, another reopens – with Manchester City preparing to face off against Real Madrid for a 12th time in the last seven seasons.

Los Blancos find themselves in quite the injury crisis, however, with dangerman Rodrygo ruled out for the season with an ACL rupture – and stars Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe joining the treatment table for Alvaro Arbeloa’s first test against Pep Guardiola.

But with Manchester City’s squad list mending, here’s how we think the Blues will line up on Wednesday night under the lights!

Predicted XI

Gianluigi Donnarumma is expected to make a return to the lineup after stepping aside for the cup clash against Newcastle. James Trafford’s solid cup form is not enough to knock the Italian from his number one perch, with both his stature and character looming large for opponents.

There’s nothing to suggest that Matheus Nunes won’t keep his place in the side. The Portugal international has kept a hard grasp on the right-Back spot since his flick into form this season – and his dominance on the ball shows no sign of letting up.

With staggering squad depth, there are different ways that Guardiola could go about selecting a rearguard duo to face the Galacticos.

However, we think a partnership of superb January signing Marc Guehi and experienced leader Ruben Dias provides a comfortable parity in collectedness in possession, and experience in defensive positioning against a highly direct team.

“There’s a lot of talk and noise” – Ruben Dias sends Real Madrid rallying call to Manchester City teammates

Rayan Ait-Nouri should take back his place at left-back after being rested at the weekend, having recovered from some niggles he felt against Nottingham Forest. The Algerian has found his feet in City blue since this slot has opened up – and has utilised his prowess in wide areas to make plenty of leads in the final third.

The man that Real Madrid have desired for years will suit the anchor position in this one. There’s a reason why Rodri snatched the Ballon d’Or from Vinicius Jr. in 2024 – and his presence in midfield in high octane periods of play is often the stimulus for City’s calculated control of big matches.

Academy ace Nico O’Reilly made his return from a brief injury in Saturday’s cup game – and after his Player of the Match performance in City’s last visit to the Santiago Bernabeu in December 2025 – wherein he grabbed an all-important goal, the Manchester local is the choice to assist Rodri in midfield, while also moving into an attacking support role when required.

The ace in the pack, Rayan Cherki, will want to leave his mark on the match, with his style of consistently bold and brash football adding a new and fresh facet to that of City’s matches against Real Madrid of recent times.

What’s a visit to the Bernabeu without the skipper? Manchester City may not have the services of Kevin De Bruyne at their disposal any longer but fewer are more qualified than current captain Bernardo Silva to take the game to Real Madrid.

Reminiscing on his brace on the way to a 4-0 historical home win against Los Blancos to send City to Istanbul, the Portugal international should continue in his wide role.

Erling Haaland relishes occasions like these and with Real Madrid once again the obstacle in City’s way, the Blues will be looking to the Norwegian to spearhead a classic performance in Madrid.

City Xtra Writers’ Predictions: Real Madrid vs Manchester City (UEFA Champions League Last-16 First-Leg)

A baptism of fire could be on the cards for Antoine Semenyo. The Ghanaian is wreaking havoc each time he takes to the pitch and he could mark his Champions League debut with a goal in the Spanish capital on Wednesday night.

Starting XI: Donnarumma; Nunes, Guehi, Dias, Ait Nouri; Rodri, O’Reilly, Bernardo; Cherki, Haaland, Semenyo.

Substitutes: Trafford, Alleyne, Khusanov, Stones, Ake, Nico, Reijnders, Foden, Savinho, Marmoush, Doku.
