Manchester City shift their focus back to the Premier League, as they aim to return to winning ways in the competition after a draw at home to Nottingham Forest.
Pep Guardiola’s men come into this one from defeat in the Spanish capital in UEFA Champions League action as Real Madrid – led by Uruguay international Federico Valverde – scored three first-half goals to gain an impressive advantage in the tie.
Our opponents this weekend did not stand a chance when they visited the Etihad Stadium earlier this season thanks to two goals from Erling Haaland and a Tijjani Reijnders effort, sealing a 3-0 win for City in December.
Things now are set to be decided at the London Stadium on Saturday night, as both teams find themselves in much different situations: West Ham fighting against relegation, whilst Manchester City remain in the Premier League title race.
City’s injury recovery list is expected to compose of Josko Gvardiol, Mateo Kovacic and Rico Lewis, whilst Pep Guardiola confirmed that Erling Haaland is available for the match when addressing the media during his pre-match press conference activity on Friday.
With Manchester City needing a win to keep up with league leaders Arsenal – and are “desperate” to do so, in Pep Guardiola’s words – this is an important match in the final stages of the 2025/26 campaign.
And ahead of the clash at the London Stadium, here is how we believe Manchester City will line-up in the capital.
Gianluigi Donnarumma holds his spot as Pep Guardiola’s starting goalkeeper in Premier League competition this season, and the Italian international looks set to be in goal once again.
After being somewhat surprisingly left on the bench at the Bernabéu in midweek, Matheus Nunes should be back in the first eleven in order to prove why he is pivotal this season for the Blues.
The rise of Abdukodir Khusanov is so good to be ignored. The Uzbek centre-back is a guardian against counter-attacks and could start on Saturday evening. He would likely form a pairing with Marc Guéhi, who has adapted well at the club.
Rayan Ait-Nouri simply has to be Manchester City’s starting left-back, offering quality from the flanks as well as pushing Nico O’Reilly into midfield – where the Academy graduate undoubtedly performs better.
Having not started a Premier League match since January, Nico González deserves another chance to shine for Manchester City, especially after a solid performance away against Newcastle in FA Cup action.
The glue in a double-pivot role, Bernardo Silva may keep his position to help everywhere on the pitch once again. The captain also provides versatility on the field, which may help against a “desperate” West Ham, in the words of one journalist on Friday.
Rayan Cherki may finally be back in the starting line up, as he arguably needs to be. This time, we predict him to play on the right side of the pitch – but not as a winger. On the other side, Nico O’Reilly completes a midfield four.
Currently in a goal drought, Erling Haaland must find his best form one more time if Manchester City are to charge for every trophy they can this season. A goal against an inferior opponent may add the boost in confidence he needs to come back.
Ever since he arrived from Bournemouth, Antoine Semenyo has been Manchester City’s most effective threat in attack. The Ghanaian international should start, in what would see City use a 4-2-2-2 formation on the ball, while defending in a classic 4-4-2, as we have seen recently.
Starting XI: Donnarumma; Nunes, Khusanov, Guéhi, Ait-Nouri; Nico, Bernardo, Cherki, O’Reilly; Haaland, Semenyo.
Substitutes: Trafford, Stones, Dias, Rodri, Reijnders, Foden, Savinho, Marmoush, Doku.
