Sunderland’s Premier League return has been marked by tenacity without the ball and resilience at the back. They sit 11th after a memorable 2-1 comeback against Newcastle United before the international break, with seven games left to chase an outside shot at Europe and no real relegation threat.

Regis Le Bris has built on defensive steel, with 36 conceded in 31 matches, only four sides have conceded more. According to Sunderland Echo, only five clubs have collected more cards than the Black Cats this season.

Their 67-card tally is driven by bookings, 65 yellows and only two reds. Chelsea have seen seven reds in 2025/26, Bournemouth five, while Tottenham and Brighton lead the overall cards chart on 79.

Trai Hume tops Sunderland’s yellow list on eight, followed by Noah Sadiki and Reinildo Mandava on seven, with Omar Alderete on six. Hume’s eight cautions are the third most in the division, behind Brighton’s Lewis Dunk who is out on his own with 10.

Reinildo was the first Sunderland player dismissed in the league, sent off 33 minutes into the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa in September. Luke O’Nien was then shown red six minutes after coming on at the end of December’s 3-0 defeat at Manchester City.

Enzo Le Fee, Alderete and Reinildo have committed 26 fouls each, narrowly ahead of Dan Ballard and Hume on 25. Sunderland’s edge has helped set their tone, even if the cards have stacked up.
