TeamTalk report that Andoni Iraola wants the Liverpool job if Fenway Sports Group decide to sack Arne Slot this summer.
It is a striking claim because Slot, only last season, delivered the Premier League title. Yet football has a brutal memory. Supporters remember trophies, certainly, but they live with performances every week. This season, Liverpool’s rhythm has felt uncertain, their attacking identity blurred, their authority diminished.
Slot has said, “‘We want to compete for every trophy’ | Slot says Liverpool are still transitioning”, yet transition can only carry a manager so far at a club conditioned to expect clarity.

Iraola leaving Bournemouth at the end of the season makes this story feel more tangible. His sides are aggressive, organised and intense, all traits Liverpool supporters naturally associate with successful Anfield football.
TeamTalk state Liverpool are keeping tabs on Iraola should they part ways with Slot. That does not mean a decision has been made, but it does suggest FSG are preparing options.
The Brentford game may matter less than the wider direction. FSG must decide whether this season is a dip after success or evidence that Slot’s Liverpool has already drifted from its best path.
Iraola’s availability gives them a live alternative. Whether they act depends on trust, not noise.
From a Liverpool fan’s point of view, this report feels both dramatic and believable. Iraola is exactly the type of coach who would intrigue supporters. He has taken Bournemouth beyond expectation, built a team with edge and intensity, and shown he can improve players without demanding endless spending.
Yet sacking Slot one year after winning the Premier League would be an enormous call. That title still matters. It cannot be brushed aside because this season has been awkward, flat and frustrating.
The deeper concern is not simply results. It is the feeling that Liverpool have lost their attacking conviction. Too often, possession has looked sterile. Too often, big players have seemed disconnected from the system. Salah’s exit only increases the need for a clear footballing vision.
Iraola would bring energy, pressing and courage. Slot must show he can bring evolution, not excuses. If FSG believe this is a temporary wobble, they should support him properly. If they believe the performances reveal something more permanent, then Iraola becomes a very serious name.
For supporters, the priority is simple, Liverpool need an identity again.
