arrived in Merseyside as Liverpool’s club record signing last summer, but his first season hasn’t gone to plan.
Although Alexander Isak was later signed for a bigger fee, Wirtz’s transfer was still a historic one at Anfield, and the German has so far failed to live up to the hype.
His struggles have coincided with the wider struggles of Arne Slot’s side but Wirtz has not played at the level he showed in the Bundesliga this campaign.
There is obviously still plenty of time for the German to come good at Liverpool, he is under contract until 2030, but another Premier League side are reportedly keen to take Wirtz off the Reds this summer.
The recent appointment of Xabi Alonso as Chelsea manager ruffled some feathers among the Anfield faithful, with many Liverpool supporters hoping that the Spaniard may replace Slot someday soon.
Alonso and Chelsea could be about to rub salt in the wound too, with the London club now making an ambitious play to bring Wirtz to Stamford Bridge this summer.
That’s according to Football Insider, who claim that Wirtz’s former boss in keen to be reunited with the player at Chelsea.
The report claims that the Blues still hold a strong interest in the 23-year-old, who may push for a move away if Slot remains in place as Liverpool’s head coach.
It also states that the club would be open to letting Wirtz go for the right price, although they will publicly deny this.
It would of course be naïve for the Reds to turn down an offer that would see them make a considerable profit on Wirtz, but it feels unlikely that Chelsea would make such an offer.
With only one season in the English topflight under his belt, Wirtz still has plenty of time to develop and adapt, and Liverpool are unlikely to move on for a loss after such a short period of time.
Wirtz may hold an affinity for Alonso, but it feels extremely unlikely that a reunion will happen any time soon unless Chelsea are ready to pay a serious premium.
