Leeds United were denied a late penalty in their 1-0 defeat by Manchester City after a VAR check on a possible handball. The Premier League said VAR judged Mateus Nunes’ arm to be in a natural position, so referee Peter Bankes was not asked to review it.

Earlier in the second half, Rayan Cherki appeared to stamp on Ilia Gruev, but the officials did not consider it violent conduct and no card was shown.

As Leeds chased an equaliser late on, a cross seemed to strike Nunes in the box. There were few protests at the time, though replays suggested contact with the arm.

Another late flashpoint came when a free-kick was awarded against Gabriel Gudmundsson in the City area, which further angered Daniel Farke.

At full-time, Bankes ended the game without extending beyond the minimum of six minutes, despite issuing yellow cards in stoppage time, and Farke reacted furiously. He charged towards the officials to remonstrate and was shown an immediate red card, with captain Ethan Ampadu restraining him as he continued his complaints.

The dismissal meant Farke could not fulfil post-match media duties, so assistant Edmund Riemer took them on.
