The Premier League said in a statement that a first-half Spurs penalty at the Stadium of Light was overturned after VAR determined Omar Alderete played the ball first.

The incident came midway through the opening period when Randal Kolo Muani drove into the Sunderland box and referee Rob Jones pointed to the spot after Alderete’s challenge as Luke O’Nien slid in.

VAR official James Bell advised an on-field review, sending Jones to the pitchside monitor.

Replays showed Alderete making contact with the ball before Muani went to ground, with O’Nien’s challenge arriving afterwards.

The referee’s on-field explanation specified the defender’s touch on the ball first and a restart to the goalkeeper via a drop ball.
