Tottenham Hotspur will not trigger the €12m option to sign Timo Werner on a permanent deal.
Werner joined Spurs on loan in January 2024 before extending the initial six-month arrangement into the current campaign. However, the German has struggled to make an impact and has scored just three goals in 41 appearances across all competitions.
Ange Postecoglou criticised Werner publicly for his display against Rangers in January, after withdrawing the 29-year-old at half-time.
“He wasn’t playing anywhere near the level he should,” Postecoglou said after the game. “When you’ve got 18-year-olds, it’s not acceptable.
“I said that to Timo. He’s a senior international. In the moment we’re in right now, it’s not like we’ve got many options. I need everyone to at least be going out there trying to give the best of themselves. His performance in the first half wasn’t acceptable.”
Spurs will not activate the clause to make Werner’s move permanent and he will return to RB Leipzig in the summer.
However, Sky Germany are reporting that there are options on the table for Werner to remain in the Premier League. The German has received ‘concrete inquiries’ from England and MLS, with Werner not interested in a Bundesliga transfer at this stage.
