BBC reports that the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents panel has unanimously concluded Leeds should not have faced Brentford without Gabriel Gudmundsson, judging his second yellow at Selhurst Park to be incorrect.

It is the second unanimous error call involving Leeds in a fortnight. Earlier in March the panel reviewed the decision to reject a penalty for a Luke O’Nien challenge on Pascal Struijk at Elland Road, in a 1-0 loss to Sunderland.

At Crystal Palace, Gudmundsson’s tackle on Ismaila Sarr brought a second booking from referee Thomas Bramall and a red. Daniel Farke insisted afterwards it did not merit a caution. Bramall initially appeared to forget the earlier booking and was reminded before producing the red card.

The panel assessed the contact as minimal and the challenge as careless rather than clearly reckless. Reduced to 10 men, Leeds spent most of the second half defending and took a 0-0 draw.

Without Gudmundsson they then struggled to create down the left in the following game against Brentford, which also finished 0-0. VAR cannot currently review second yellow cards, but from next season VARs will be able to ask referees to revisit clearly wrong second bookings.
