Sunderland will send 12 players to the FIFA World Cup, with on-loan defender Lutsharel Geertruida added to the Netherlands squad on Monday after Jurrien Timber failed to recover from a groin injury.
According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland remain in discussions over Geertruida as his loan ends this month. He is due to return to RB Leipzig, although a Wearside comeback cannot be ruled out.
Timber featured as Arsenal lost the Champions League final to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties, but he has not fully recovered and will miss the tournament. Geertruida becomes Sunderland’s 12th World Cup call-up, joining Brian Brobbey and Robin Roefs with the Netherlands.
Against the rest of the Premier League, Manchester City lead the way with 19 selections, Arsenal have 15 and Manchester United 13. Sunderland sit joint fourth with Crystal Palace on 12.
Chelsea and Liverpool have 11 apiece, Aston Villa 10, Tottenham nine and Brighton eight. Newcastle United, Fulham and Wolverhampton Wanderers each have seven.
