  • Last year’s finish: 13th
  • First match: Monday, August 18 3pm ET / 8pm GMT @ Leeds United
  • Where they’ll be after five: 6pts. with 1W, 3D, 1L

Last season was a tale of two halves for the Toffees. The team struggled in 2024 under Sean Dyche and were facing a relegation battle. This would’ve been a disaster in the last season of football being played at Goodison Park. But the appointment of David Moyes ignited a nine-game unbeaten streak, and lifted them into mid-table safety. Everton’s final game ended up being a more relaxing affair, as they beat Southampton 2-0 and said farewell to their famous home.

Season outlook

The season opener is a tricky away trip to newly promoted Leeds United on a Monday night. This is followed by a home fixture against Brighton, the first Premier League encounter at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Wolves away follows this at the end of August, Aston Villa at home going into September, then the big Merseyside derby at Anfield.

Moyes’s men have gone about their business in a steady fashion during pre-season. With the new stadium bounce in full force I’m confident they can get a decent tally of points on the board early on.

Transfer news

Some shrewd signings had been made by the Blues, but the excitement went up a notch when they secured the services of Jack Grealish from Manchester City. The 100 million pound man is a great acquisition, joining other new faces Thierno Barry, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Carlos Alcaraz.

Everton show no signs of slowing down their player recruitment. There’s interest in Leicester City winger Abdul Fatawu, and they had an £18 million bid for John McGinn turned down by Aston Villa. They also remain heavily linked to Southampton talent Tyler Dibling.

There were notable outgoings as well, as Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Asmir Begović and Ashley Young all left the club. It really does feel like a new era at the club, especially with that shiny new stadium. Everton fans have every right to be excited about the new campaign.

Key Players

  • Forwards Beto showed some better performances under Moyes, but he will now be challenged by new signing Thierno Barry for his place. The Frenchman arrives from Villarreal and will be hoping to hit the ground running.  Iliman Ndiaye scored 9 times in his debut season. He netted both goals in the last match at Goodison and will be hungry for more in his second season.
  • Midfielders Jack Grealish is the marquee signing supporters are raving about. With the World Cup coming at the end of the season, the Englishman will be hoping to get his spark back to force his way back into the national squad.  Player of the season last year was Idrissa Gueye. The midfield general was ever present and no player completed more tackles (133) than the Senegalese legend.
  • Defenders Jarrad Branthwaite remains a highly rated central defender for the blues and is considered a top talent for the England squad.  David Moyes has a strong tactical reputation for his back line and bought in Adam Aznou from Bayern Munich. At only 19 he plays on the lefthand side and should bring some real energy to his new team.
  • Goalkeeper England number one Jordan Pickford a is a key senior player in the squad and recently picked up his 76th England cap. He has now surpassed Joe Hart and David Seaman to become the Three Lions’ second-most capped No.1 of all time.  He will be kept on his toes going into the new season though, as Everton have also bought in Mark Travers from Bournemouth for around £4 million. The depth of the squad is certainly looking a lot stronger as we approach another Premier League season.

Other Bits

It’s always sad to see an historic, old stadium go. Nothing lasts forever in football though and The People’s Club have an amazing new home in Hill Dickinson Stadium for fans to enjoy. With a capacity of 52,769 it certainly rivals the other stadium in Liverpool and will be used for the UEFA European Championships in 2028. The atmosphere is sure to be rocking and most seats sold out in its first season, as Everton look to climb up the table and make their new home a fortress.
