Everton target Premier League return for Luiz

Everton’s search for midfield quality has led them to Italy, with the Daily Mail reporting that Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz is a loan target for the Toffees this summer. Nottingham Forest are also said to be keen, but it is Everton who could offer the more compelling sporting case, particularly as David Moyes looks to inject composure and control into a team that too often ran on chaos last season.

Juventus, however, are reluctant to sanction a loan move. Having signed Luiz from Aston Villa for £42.4 million last year, they would prefer a permanent sale in the region of £26 million. Luiz made just three league starts in a turbulent debut campaign, both on and off the pitch.

Frustrations and public response

Luiz has not shied away from expressing his dissatisfaction with how things unfolded. “I didn’t come here just to post photos,” he said in response to a fan questioning his motivation. “I came here with a purpose… why hasn’t a signing like mine played two consecutive games with this shirt?”

His frustration is understandable. At Villa, Luiz was one of the most consistent midfielders in the division. At Juventus, he found himself sidelined, then criticised, all while facing personal upheaval off the pitch.

Everton’s interest reflects clear strategy

Everton’s interest in Luiz is logical. He is Premier League-proven, positionally intelligent, and tactically adaptable. Whether operating as a deep-lying pivot or a roaming number eight, Luiz would add composure and ball progression to a side often starved of both.

What remains to be seen is whether Juventus are willing to compromise. If Everton can negotiate a loan with an option or obligation to buy, this could be one of the smartest moves of the summer.

The potential arrival of Douglas Luiz would feel like a step in the right direction. For years now, Everton have lacked calm, ball-playing midfielders who can run a game without being overrun themselves. Luiz, based on his time at Villa, offers just that.

We all saw what he was about in the Premier League. He can win the ball, use it intelligently, and keep possession ticking without always going sideways. He is also brave, both on and off the pitch. That Instagram post? That was the sound of a player who cares, who has pride, and who knows he is being underused.

The Juventus move clearly has not worked out. But that does not mean he is finished. Sometimes players simply do not fit the system, the league, or the dressing room. But Everton could be a proper fit. A club with fire in its belly and something to prove.

If they can structure the deal right, this would be a major coup. Everton needs leaders, they need personality, and need players who have been through adversity and come out swinging. Luiz ticks every box.
