Jordan Pickford is routinely mocked by opposition fans but ask anyone of an Everton persuasion about his importance. Pickford’s performance was not enough to earn Everton a result at Bournemouth but he did his utmost to keep the Toffees in the game as long as possible. The England international made seven saves, including twice denying Dango Ouattara. It’s not the first time Sean Dyche’s side have been reliant on Pickford to keep the score down.
Another typically tireless performance from the Colombian, who was effective at both ends during Crystal Palace’s draw with Chelsea. He won nine duels and made five tackles while offering an attacking outlet down the right flank. Munoz set the wheels in motion for Palace’s equaliser, as he robbed Cole Palmer of possession and played in Ismaila Sarr.
Another week, another performance that underlined Dean Huijsen’s huge potential. The centre-back was excellent amid an admittedly limited threat against Everton, helping Bournemouth to three points and a clean sheet.
The 19-year-old made nine clearances, won five defensive duels and completed 100% of his attempted dribbles, exhibiting the confidence that has highlighted him as one to watch. Recent reports of interest from Real Madrid are unsurprising.
Far more assured than he has been in recent weeks. Martinez made four clearances, three interceptions and a crucial last-man challenge as Manchester United earned a hard-fought point at table toppers Liverpool. He charged forward to open the scoring at Anfield, thundering a high finish past Alisson. The left-sided role suits him perfectly in Ruben Amorim’s system. This was a performance closer to what United should expect – and need – from the World Cup winner.
Picked out David Brooks for Bournemouth’s winner against Everton with a peach of a first-time cross. The Hungarian was solid defensively and an energetic outlet, as ever, throughout. Bournemouth should brace themselves for bids for a player who is getting better and better.
Back from suspension to underline how important he is becoming to the Manchester United midfield. Combative in the engine room, his positioning, ball-winning and aggression make Ruben Amorim’s team safer. Ugarte won four tackles and seven ground duels while recycling possession effectively as United grew into the game. He’s starting to settle into the Premier League.
In for his first league start since November and did his chance of more regular football no harm. After coming close with an effort deflected over the bar, Barkley opened the scoring with his fourth of the campaign. He barely misplaced a pass (98%), completed 100% of his dribbles (3/3) and won 8/10 ground duels. An excellent showing from a player who has been a shrewd snap-up by Villa.
Bruno Fernandes divides opinion but when you watch him perform like he did at Liverpool, it makes you wonder what the detractors are seeing. Fernandes was outstanding at Anfield, where he won 11/13 duels, created four chances, completed 100% of his dribbles and recorded an assist. It was an exceptional piece of play for the latter, as he attracted a swarm of red shirts before squeezing a pass into Lisandro Martinez.
The Manchester United captain delivered in a big game when his side needed him.
Is Bryan Mbeumo one of the most underrated players in the Premier League? Mbeumo was in devastating form as Brentford secured their first away win of the campaign in style, dismantling struggling Southampton 5-0 at St Mary’s. He scored twice, registered an assist, and created five chances in a brilliant performance.
Only Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland have scored more Premier League goals than the 25-year-old this season, who has now notched 18 goals and assists in his last 22 league appearances. That’s elite output.
Has Savinho arrived as a Manchester City player? Inconsistency has plagued the summer signing this season but he’s shown signs of putting the package together in recent games. After a goal and assist at Leicester last time out, he was the star of the show as Pep Guardiola’s side beat West Ham 4-1 at the Etihad.
Involved in each of the first three goals, his shot deflected off Vladimir Coufal for the opener, before he breezed past the Czech full-back to set up Erling Haaland for the second. Another assist, nudged perfectly into the path of Haaland, completed a fine afternoon’s work for the 20-year-old.
Erling Haaland must love playing against West Ham. The Norwegian extended his record against the Hammers to nine goals in six appearances with a brilliant brace in Manchester City’s 4-1 win at the Etihad.
He hung in the air to nod in Savinho’s cross, before racing onto a through pass from the Brazilian to dink in a second. Julen Lopetegui’s backline was badly exposed by City’s goal machine, who will be determined to hunt down Mohamed Salah in the Golden Boot race.
