Hull City welcome Oxford United to the MKM Stadium this Sunday for a Matchweek 2 clash in the EFL Championship.

The Tigers will be hoping to build on their solid defensive display in the 1-1 draw against Coventry City, aiming to take another positive result at home.

Oxford, meanwhile, will be looking to recover after last week’s defeat to Portsmouth and start their campaign on the front foot.

The last meeting between the two teams ended with Hull City winning 2-1.

Joe Collins (To Hull and Back Podcast): A solid start to our season last weekend at Coventry, and a promising performance that ended in penalty defeat against Wrexham in midweek, gives us some confidence going into this weekend against Oxford.

Being honest, the most pressing issues this week have been off the field (again).

Having expected an outcome to our appeal against a three-window fee restriction by Monday, at the time of writing we are still yet to receive a verdict from the independent panel after our hearing. This has held up a pair of deals.

Winger David Akintola has been close to signing for about a month. Things naturally take time, but he has been with the team at the training ground since Monday yet is still not announced and registered as a Hull City player.

Ex-Manchester United left-back Brandon Williams is also awaiting EFL ratification on his return to football after a trial period with us over the latter half of pre-season.

This has, rightfully, annoyed some fans. One in particular has gone to the extent of using Elon Musk's AI tool 'Grok' to assess City's next steps, and then putting this to some random EFL call centre guy at their base in Preston over the phone. Being honest, I can't see legal action against the EFL being upheld in court after we broke their financial rules and then the independent appeal panel taking longer than expected to deliver a resolution.

Anyway, injury wise; Semi Ajayi is injured already, which should be no shock to anybody with a brain. It's a shame because he's started his Hull City career very well. Fortunately, John Egan is better anyway (in my view).

Mo Belloumi and Liam Millar are edging closer to returns, as is Lewie Coyle, and it's likely that Oli McBurnie and Joe Gelhardt get their first league starts of the season against Oxford.

Prediction: 2-0

Daniel Oliveira (Playmaker Stats Editor): Oxford United will be keen to put last week’s home defeat to Portsmouth behind them.

After struggling to score in that game, they may take a more attacking approach against Hull. That said, Hull have looked solid at the back, so Oxford could find it tough to create chances unless they can spot and exploit gaps in the Tigers’ midfield.
