PREVIEW: Tottenham travel to Liverpool as relegation looms | OneFootball

Tottenham Hotspur will travel to Anfield this afternoon to take on Liverpool, with Spurs hoping for some crucial points as their relegation battle continues.

Whilst Liverpool have failed to live up to expectations this term following their 20th top flight title win last season, Spurs have been far more disappointing and remain embroiled in talk of relegation to the Championship. The Lilywhites currentluy sit in 16th, just a singular point above the relegation zone and without a league win since December 28th when they beat Crystal Palace 1-0 at Selhurst Park, in fact you have to go back six weeks to find the last time Spurs picked up a point.

Tottenham boss Igor Tudor spoke to the press about the current situation his club find themselves in, saying “It’s tough, for sure. Not just because of the last game but because of the period. Not an easy situation, not easy moment. Big challenge to change things. Like everything in life, you can choose how to see the situation.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool remain in contention for a Champions League spot and will be hoping to capitalise on Chelsea’s loss to Newcastle last night to move them up to 5th in the table come the end of this evening. The Reds currently sit level on points with Chelsea, but remain well out of the title race with Arsenal a whopping 22 points ahead of the defending champions.

Liverpool have won their last three meetings with Spurs, including a 2-1 win in the reverse fixture earlier this season in which Aleksander Isak and Hugo Ekitike got on the scoresheet, with Richarlison netting late on for Spurs. That match saw six yellow cards dished out, as well as two reds for Spurs with Xavi Simons and Cristian Romero dismissed. Romero will be unavailable for this one due to an ongoing injury, whilst Simons has been limited to just 23 minutes off the bench across his side’s last two fixtures…defeats to Palace and Atletico Madrid.

Mohamed Salah has been in good form as of late, scoring in two of his last three outings, and has also scored the second most goals (12) against Spurs in Premier League history, only behind the league’s all-time top scorer Alan Shearer. The Reds also love putting a few past Tottenham, having scored 127 goals against them in the Premier League era, which is the second most they have scored against any side. Spurs have also conceded 17 goals in their last four visits to Anfield, most notably of course the 5-1 scoreline last season that confirmed Liverpool’s title win.

Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch signed a new deal with Liverpool in the week and received high praise from Arne Slot in his pre-match press conference, “It’s obvious and clear that the club and I see the importance of him and how much he has developed. As a result of that, he has signed a new contract. He’s another player who was signed very young and has the ability to grow.”
